As rail transport increases in popularity with travelers, Spain is one of the leaders when it comes to high-speed trains. Now, a new project will connect two of the country’s most fascinating cities, the historic Malaga on the Costa del Sol and the iconic Barcelona.

There is no doubt that Spain is a popular destination for many travelers, including its historic and beautiful cities and its endless idyllic beaches. However, a new high-speed train has been announced that will make Spain even more popular. For travelers planning a Spanish vacation in winter, this train journey is one of the best.

While the country is mostly renowned for Madrid, Barcelona and the Balearic and Canary Islands, one city in Andalucía boasts the best museums, Roman and Moorish architecture and idyllic beaches.

Malaga is the hometown of artist Pablo Picasso and Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas and will soon be the starting and ending point of a new high-speed train.

About the journey through Spain

The full train journey will last five and a half hours and ultimately offers travelers access to Antoni Gaudi’s Barcelona. The new train hails from the budget rail service, Iryo, and will offer two daily departures whether from Malaga to Barcelona or the reverse journey.

Meanwhile, for travelers who time it right the first week of the initial launch offers a promotion with fares as low as $26.50 one-way during weekdays, depending on what class is selected. Moreover, tickets will cost more on weekends, and the first train will launch in time for the holidays, on December 15, 2024.

While the train runs between the two major cities, travelers will have the chance to disembark in some of Spain’s most iconic cities, Cordoba, Madrid and Zaragoza. Naturally, Cordoba and Zaragoza are unique and historic cities in their own right and offer a different vibe than Malaga and Barcelona. Cordoba boasts its picturesque, whitewashed Jewish Quarter, while Zaragoza offers the lively Plaza de Pilar.

Meanwhile, should passengers choose a stop in Madrid, the layover is a short 20 minutes, so passengers would need to reroute for a longer stay.

Should travelers be in Barcelona, this is one of the most connected cities in Spain. Meanwhile, another popular Iryo route departs from Seville. If starting in Barcelona, the trains will depart at 11:50 am, to arrive in Malaga at 5:42 pm. For those catching the train in Malaga, it will depart at 11:35 am, and arrive in Barcelona at 5:37 pm.
