3 Unique New Bars Combine Disco, Libraries and Bowling with Social Drinking

whiskey bar

Maybe I am just no longer at the age where spending hours getting gussied up to stand in a line to pay $6 for beer before joining a mass of fellow patrons sweating to some noise that sounds like putting a tin can to your ear and leaning against a Pac-Man machine sounds like “fun.” I want to sip scotch in a quiet corner where children aren’t tossing spaghetti at their parents and then I want to have fun. With a rise in unique twists on bars, I just might be able to combine the two experiences into one delightful package.

I am a self professed nerd. I could live at the library. I am not a fan of transition literature is making into the digital age. Shelves of books lined up like soldiers, the gentle hush of whispers and pages turning is a solace I adore. So when Multnomah Whiskey Library opened in Portland, I added a visit to my Bucket List. It is exactly like it sounds – shelves of bottles line up like little soldiers. The offerings aren’t just limited to whiskey. Spirits of all kind are housed in the charming and unique atmosphere. Little carts circulate around the bar, trays are brought to you if you want some food to feast on socialize or sip away your cares and you can store unfinished purchase in a spirit locker.

Honeycut - LA

Honeycut in Los Angeles has combined a unique cocktail of atmospheres. The bar itself is a wood paneled and aged beast where lovingly crafted drinks are on tap. Five cocktails are on tap and ready to make the trip to your glass as soon as you order. Once you have indulged in a few adult beverages, you can dance on a floor of colorful blocks that bring back disco. Instead of giant ball spinning lights across the room, a ceiling made up of 1,500 reflective, slowly swaying balls make the similar effect.

fulton alley

Feel like bowling but the idea wearing rented two-toned shoes and eating processed cheese doesn’t appeal to you? Fulton Alley in New Orleans will change your view. A boutique bowling alley bar has sprung into being in the garage of the Harrah’s Casino. You can still get your typical alley fare, but it has been modernized with a menu that offers a mix of things like Crispy Pork Confit Salad with fish tots the reinvented as Blackened Drum “Tots” with a smoked tomato aioli. 12 bowling lanes wrapped in an atmosphere of art, music, craft food and cocktails will bring a new level of appreciation for the sport in an adult setting.
