Unique Getaway: Thos. Moser Customer In Residence Program

Thos Moser Signing

Looking for something unique to do? Hunting for an escape that will be memorable and, perhaps, educational? How about creating a gorgeous piece of furniture with the Willy Wonka of wood working, Tom Moser?

Guests participating in the Customer In Residence Program work with their own mentor, along with Moser at the helm of the program, to create a piece that will last forever and be so much more than just furniture. The week-long program is an immersion into the craft that truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

After spending time in a workshop with the master mentor, guests walk away with new skills, new appreciation for woodworking and an amazing experience. (Not to mention a stunning piece they created with their own hands that is also signed by Moser!)

The intrigue in this fresh adventure had me hunting for more information. One of the amazing members of Moser’s program was kind enough to answer several burning questions I had…

What makes the program different from other “working” getaways?

It started out in 2007 for the customer who wanted to see how the pieces were made. The curious customer wanted to see the process, once he got there and watched, the cabinetmaker invited him to join in and they made an amazing connection. Since then, it grew into an unique hands-on experience.

What is the typical day at the Customer in Residence (CIR) like?

There are usually between 8-10 people who all are participating in the program. Each person is paired with their own cabinet maker to help them with the process. They teach by showing each guest techniques and proper form. Working together, Tom’s philosophy is put into the experience…

“The best instruction takes place shoulder to shoulder, stroke to stroke, face to face. While I take great pleasure in creating wooden objects, the thrill of teaching –in a sense, “creating”-woodworkers has been my predominant joy of the last decade or so. It is a constant delight to watch woodworking cross social divides in our shop, to see high-school dropouts and Ph.D.’s bond over a common love of wood. To this day, the teaching works in both directions; I learn something every week from people in the shop.” Thomas Moser, from Artistry In Wood

You can do as little or as much as you want. If you prefer to watch, that is absolutely fine. You can be as hands-on or hands-off  as you like. Quality and details are never sacrificed, but the cabinet makers will ensure you are getting what you want. A new respect for the craft is born and it’s amazing to see the love that goes into each creation.

The group travels together, eats together and spends free time with the cabinet makers to talk, swap stories and share information. There is even time to relax and socialize together which develops a bond with everyone. It becomes a very emotional experience.

Who is the target audience, who would enjoy the program the most?

Anyone who is looking for an educational vacation, anyone looking for deep appreciation for the craft or a unique experience. We actually had a gentleman come in and created a bed for his son. A lot of people will create amazing pieces for gifts. We’ve even had a marriage proposal after the couple worked together in the shop for the week. A few celebrities have also come  to experience the program. Everyone is welcome!

What tips would you give those looking into joining the program?

There is really no preparation before you arrive. A safety training program and shop tour prepare guests for the experience. We encourage everyone to come as you are. Novice or veteran, everyone will enjoy themselves. Most take pleasure in finding a new respect for the craft and maintaining the bonds formed. Even if you have never even touched a piece of wood, you will find an experience you that you will never forget.

Dates fill up very quickly and this opportunity only happens 5-7 times a year. Interested guests will need to call Steve Wyman at 800-708-9041.
