Travel Mistakes That Will Bust Your Vacation and Budget

Whether you are going across the country or overseas, try these 3 tips to save money and time on any trip.

Time It Right

The best times to travel can vary by your destination’s “peak season,” “off season,” and “shoulder season.” Peak will mean crowds and higher prices, off season means you’re usually risking inclement weather or refurbishments, but the shoulder season is more affordable and typically means a great experience. On a general basis, travel in late August or early September. Looking for a holiday break? Do your traveling two weeks before Christmas.

Hotel Perks – Just Ask

If you like to live life on whim, do your hotel rate negotiation in person. Find a manager to deal with and go in knowing the competitive rates being offered on third party sites. Standing there in person, cash in hand, ready to book and eliminate the middleman will result in the hotel making sure they have your patronage. Need a late check out? Just ask! Many times hotels will waive the fee if you just ask.

Make the Bellman Your New BFF

Most people hit up the concierge to help them with their trip. In some cases, the concierge is a great resource and can even help you score reservations. However, they often receive kickbacks from restaurants and attractions they send you to. Stick to treating the bellman with a tip and ask him or her for trip tips. They will know where locals like to eat, neighborhoods to check out, and areas or tourist traps to avoid.
