3 Stunning Locations To Visit In Croatia

Croatia is an up-and-coming vacation destination, featuring gorgeous scenery, great beaches and many fascinating attractions. Here we list three of the most stunning and interesting locations you should head to on a vacation in Croatia.

1. Plitvice Lakes

Located in Plitvice National Park, Plitvice Lakes are a series of 16 turquoise mountain lakes. Each lake is interconnected with the next with waterfalls and manmade wooden pathways.

Plitvice Lakes are known as being the biggest attraction in inland Croatia and are set in the Dinaric Alps in the Lika region of the country. There are 12 upper lakes and four lower lakes to explore. While it is perfectly safe to visit, it is recommended to stay near the paths and the water.

This is due to the fact the UNESCO designated park was the site of the first battle between Serbia and Croatia in the Baltan wars. While it has since been certified mine-free, some believe there might be the odd mine left behind in the more remote areas of the park. Staying close to the water and using the pathways is completely safe however.

2. Zadar Sea Organ

This next location is beautiful to the eyes, but is also pleasant to the ears. Located in the popular seaside town of Zadar is a magical musical instrument. The design shows a set of large white steps heading down into the water. This is known as the Zadar Sea Organ.

The Zadar Sea Organ is similar to the High Tide Organ in Blackpool, UK, as well as the Wave Organ in San Francisco, California. Basically, the instrument is made up of 35 tubes, with a large resonating cavity. As the sea water washes into the organ, a unique music plays. The music resembles the melancholy sound of whale calls.

The Zadar Sea Organ is the work of architect Nikola Bašić and was complete in 2005. The organ is backed by another art installation, the Sun Salutation, which consists of an ethereal pattern of glass panels. These capture the sunlight, which powers a light show in tribute to the solar system.

3. Tesla’s Birthplace Museum, Podoštra

Most people know of Nikola Tesla. A man who was born to Serbian parents in modest circumstances in the town of Smiljan in Croatia. Tesla contributed to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply system, although he died in poverty.

The family homestead was simple with a whitewashed home and barn. There is also Serbian Orthodox Church on the property, of which Tesla’s father was the minister. These days the homestead stands as a monument to the famous scientist.

Croatia wants the world to remember their famous son and the homestead was opened as a museum in July 10, 2006, the 150th anniversary of Tesla’s birth.

The exhibits cover two halves of Nikola Tesla’s life. The one side is about his simple country upbringing, while the other relates to his scientific life. A multimedia center offers hands-on science exhibits with renovated original structures. This is a wonderful playground for future scientists and has become a popular tourist attraction, ideal for science nerds.
