Spain Announced As Safest EU Destination For Travel By ECDC

Spain Announced As Safest EU Destination For Travel By ECDCThe European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reveals in its latest map update that Spain is currently the safest destination to travel to in the European Union in the COVID-19 pandemic. Read on to find out what you need to know to enjoy an autumn or winter vacation in Spain.

Spain is the safest EU destination right now

According to the latest maps published by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the majority of Spain’s territory is colored green. This marks the country as a safe destination for anyone wishing to travel there for an autumn or winter break.

At the time of writing, the following Spanish regions are currently on the green list:

  • Andalusia
  • Asturias
  • Basque Country
  • Cantabria
  • Castile and Leon
  • Extremadura
  • Galicia
  • La Rioja

Outside of the map, it should be noted that the Canary Islands are also colored green.

What this categorization means is that all of these regions in Spain have reported less than 50 COVID-19 infections per 100,000 inhabitants over the last couple of weeks. It further means that the regions have had a test positivity rate of not more than 4 percent.

Other regions in the country are currently colored orange as they have reported slightly higher numbers of COVID-19 infections. Despite this, all regions of the Spanish territory remain safe for travel.

As almost all of Spain has managed to keep COVID-19 infection rates low, travel to and from the country is encouraged. However, it is particularly safe for those travelers who have already been fully vaccinated, or have recovered from the virus in the last six months.

Despite this, things can change quickly during the ongoing pandemic, so it is recommended that travelers check Spain’s current entry rules before booking a trip to avoid any disappointment.

Spain’s categorization of countries based on risk

In the meanwhile, Spain updates weekly its own categorization of countries based on their risk. At present, the majority of EU nations are on the country’s high-risk list, including Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and more.

In the latest update, Spanish authorities have announced tightened entry rules for Czechia, Denmark, Greece, Liechtenstein and a number of other EU regions.

What is required to visit Spain?

Spain’s current rules require travelers to present a valid EU Digital COVID-19 Pass or other equivalent document to enter. A more detailed explanation is that visitors must show a vaccination certificate proving that the holder has been vaccinated with one of the vaccines approved by Spain, or a recovery certificate, indicating that the holder has recovered from COVID-19 in the last six months.

According to SchengenVisaInfo.com, the following are the approved vaccines for travel to Spain:

  • Comirnaty – Pfizer/BioNTech Manufacturing GmbH.
  • Vaxzevria – AstraZeneca
  • AstraZeneca/SK Bio, SK Bioscience Co. Ltd.
  • Vaccine AstraZeneca (Covishield™), Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd.
  • Janssen-Cilag International NV.
  • Spikevax; mRNA-1273), Moderna Biotech
  • Vero Cell – Sinopharm/Beijing Institute of Biological Products Co., Ltd.
  • Sinovac-CoronaVac (Vero Cell), Sinovac Life Sciences Co., Ltd.

Any traveller who is unable to present a vaccination or recovery certificate is able to provide a negative COVID-19 test result, taken in the past three days, to be able to enter the country.

Besides the vaccination and test documentation, travelers visiting Spain must also complete a Health Control Form. For ease of use, the form can be completed and signed electronically.

Meanwhile, Spain’s Association of Airlines has revealed that the country expects to register an increased number of flights over the coming months. In fact, the number of flights registered is anticipated to surpass those registered during the same period in 2019, prior to the pandemic.
