Covering 300 km (186 mi), Switzerland’s new multi-day ViaBerna hiking route has 20 stages, making it perfect for hikers of all abilities. Meanwhile, the hiking trail combines cities, mountains and lakes, offering ever-changing scenery along the way.

While the new hiking trail runs for 300 km (186 mi), the 20 stages of ViaBerna vary in length to suit hikers of all abilities. In fact, the stages range from 10.5 km (6.5 mi) to 24.3 km (15 mi) and are rated easy, moderate or difficult.

To give an idea of the new hiking route, the first five stages head through the forested slopes of the Jura Mountains. The next stage heads past Switzerland’s capital, Bern. Next, the hiking trail runs along Lake Thun onto a truly spectacular trail that heads through the Alps to the Susten Pass. 1. Bern to Münsingen

Taking the 15.5 km (10 mi) hike from Bern to Münsingen in the Aare Valley reveals beautiful river landscapes. Naturally, Bern is worth visiting, especially its UNESCO World Heritage Site Old City, along with friendly locals and plenty of history. While there, visit the Berner Altstadt in its medieval center. Also explore the covered shopping arcades, bars and cellar shops along the way.

2. Hike to the summit of Mont-Sujet

3. Visit the alpine town of Thun
