Auld Lang Syne is a well-known song heard around the world as one year changes into another. Meanwhile, the ditty comes from Scotland and it is still the best place to celebrate the New Year. The legendary Hogmanay (as they say in Scotland) is at its best in Edinburgh. Here, the city is filled with drinking, dancing and fireworks and the celebration often carries on for three days.

Spaniards are famously fond of fiestas and festivals, and that includes Madrid’s famous New Year’s Eve celebration in the Puerta del Sol. Much like New York City’s Ball Drop, Madrid’s celebration is broadcast to people across the country. However, if you really want to experience a Spanish New Year’s you have to try out a special local custom. As the bell tolls to midnight, you have to cram a grape into your mouth for every toll. If you manage to eat all 12 grapes, you can expect a happy and prosperous New Year. We have to say, it isn’t easy but it is a lot of fun.

Celebrate in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai in Thailand is a fascinating cultural city at any time of the year, but in December it’s even better with warm daytime temperatures. Rather than choking down grapes, the city’s New Year’s Eve is truly magnificent. As the clock reaches midnight on December 31, thousands of paper lanterns are released into the night sky. However, it does have one similarity to those grapes, as releasing a lantern symbolizes new beginnings and good luck in the New Year. If you don’t get the chance to release your own lantern, the sight is magnificent.

Heading to somewhere much cooler, Reykjavik also offers a spectacular New Year’s celebration. While the city doesn’t have an official fireworks display, this doesn’t hold back the people of the Icelandic capital. Virtually everyone buys fireworks from ICE-SAR, Iceland’s Search and Rescue department and lets them off at the stroke of midnight. Not only does this fund the valuable institution for another year, but it also does double duty, giving everyone a fabulous fireworks display.
