Many Americans dream of spending Christmas in Europe with its chocolate box scenes, mulled wine and more. This is understandable, as European cities go all-out for the holidays with quaint Christmas markets, twinkling lights and more. However, there are also many charming places in the USA that celebrate the holidays beautifully, including some unique events. Here we look at four such places to spend Christmas in 2023.

Located in Virginia, Alexandra is renowned for its quirky, unusual holiday traditions. Among these is the Scottish Christmas Walk that celebrates the town’s heritage. There is also a Waterskiing Santa event, a parade of water-skiing Christmas characters that have been a tradition in the area for many years.

Meanwhile, visitors flock to Holly’s Tacky Christmas Lights at 1601 Collingwood Road to see the incredible home display. During the holidays, visitors can also watch fireworks on Mount Vernon backed by holiday music.

With its vintage style and beautiful decorations, Woodstock always celebrates the holidays perfectly. In fact, its pretty streets look like a snowy Christmas card come to life. Meanwhile, the town is renowned for its annual Wassail Weekend. This features many fun events, including a parade, horse-drawn sleigh rides, concerts, craft fairs, a community Yule Log and a family wassail feast.

For those who haven’t heard of it, wassail is a beverage or hot mulled cider, wine or ale with spices. This is drunk as an integral part of an ancient English Yuletide drinking ritual. This includes door-to-door charity giving and more. In the past, it was also used to ensure a good harvest in the coming year.

Unique holidays in Taos, New Mexico

This New Mexico town turns truly magical over the holidays. The quaint architecture is lit with the traditional farolitos (small paper lanterns). Meanwhile, a southwestern Santa leads the carolers in musical events during what is dubbed the Lighting of Ledoux.

Moreover, another neighborhood celebrates the Bonfires on Bent Street. This exciting event features Aztec fire dancers and delicious regional foods including posole and green chili. But that’s not all, as the town hosts Las Posadas, a nine-day celebration reenacting Mary and Joseph’s journey, culminating at San Geronimo Church in Taos Pueblo on Christmas Eve.

North Pole, Alaska hosts Christmas all year round, especially at Santa Claus House, its best-known attraction. This huge store features an endless selection of Christmas toys and ornaments and is hosted by a live Santa who listens to your wishes. Meanwhile, browsing the store, visitors will see walls covered in Dear Santa letters from children around the globe.

Right next door, the Antler Academy is home to Santa’s reindeer team. The kids can pet and feed the reindeer for a truly magical holiday experience.
