Restaurant Review: Chez L’Epicier Montreal, Quebec “Outstanding French Food”

Restaurant Review: Chez L'Epicier Montreal, Quebec "Great French Food"

On Wednesday June 26th, 2013 my friend and I decided to have dinner in Old Montreal at Chez L’Epicier.  Chez L’Epicier is an upscale French Bistro owned by Chef Laurent Godbout and located at 311 Rue St-Paul E in Old Montreal.  The restaurant has a great reputation for fine French food.  Even though the location is in a popular tourist area, you don’t have to worry about parking because on the right hand side of the restaurant there is a handy parking lot.

The night we went we had reserved and when we arrived at the restaurant we were seated immediately.  Our waiter was pleasant and spoke excellent English which was very helpful.  Before we even ordered he brought us a complimentary Amuse Bouche which is basically a bite-sized hors d’œuvre.  The Amuse Bouche for the evening was a melt-in-your-mouth Macaroon flavored with an olive and goat cheese filling, it whetted our appetite for the scrumptious meal.

Once we ordered our meal our waiter brought over bread with dill-butter.  For our appetizers my friend ordered the beef tartar with beet puree, lardoons and Québec radishes at $15.  The presentation was creative and perfect.  She loved the beef tartar and said it was the best she ever had and just wanted more.

I decided on the vegetable salad with passion fruit vinaigrette and fresh goat cheese at $12.   I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, all the flavors were perfect.

For our main course we both order the scallops perfumed with foie gras, mushroom crumble, orange scented carrots and shiitake broth at $35.  The scallops were cooked to perfection, with just the right flavor and tenderness.  The foie gras and flavors were outstanding.

We were both too full for dessert and finished our meal with coffee.  Even though we lingered over our meal talking we never felt rushed.  We highly recommend this restaurant, it has great atmosphere, great service and scrumptious food!  Believe me Chef Laurent Godbout knows how to cook!
