NEVER Reveal Your Solo Status

That old cliche, “There’s safety in numbers,” is true. If you are traveling alone, don’t air out that information. In fact, make up a group you are traveling with. By revealing you are traveling alone, you paint a huge target on yourself.

NEVER Reveal Your Accommodations

This should be a rule you follow generally speaking, but should be underlined if you are traveling solo. Letting people know where you are staying tells them several things – your budget, where you will be sleeping, and where you can be found. All it takes is a simply inquiry at the front desk to find your exact room.

Leave Info at Home

Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, and a scheduled check-in phone call or text time with someone you trust at home. Stick to that check in time, too. If you fail to make the check-in, arrange for the person to try and contact you. If something were to happen, you would save precious time.

Register

Make sure you register with the U.S. Department of State when traveling overseas. It will keep you up to date on what’s happening back in the states. Also register with the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers that will give you access to a broad network of medical services.

Dress the Part

Err on the side of modesty. Drawing attention to yourself can be dangerous or offensive to the culture. Pack light, but be aware of any customs that might require specific dress code. For example, to visit the Vatican, you will need to have your shoulders and knees covered.

Trust Your Gut

Always trust your intuition and your gut. If something feels off, fishy, or you have any wary feelings, find someplace safe to collect yourself and analyze the situation. You can politely decline any offer and remove yourself from the situation, but don’t be afraid to be rude and get out of a bad spot.
