Water Safety – Pool Rules to Keep Swimmers Safe

swim

Water safety during the summer is vital. Make sure you institute these pool rules to keep swimmers safe during the summer swimming season. From sun-bathing on the beach, to lounging at the lake, don’t forget to ensure swim-safety is your top priority.

Don’t Rely on Flotation Devices

There are a ton of fun pool toys on the market. Water wings, noodles, inflatable loungers, and inflatable devices are toys – not substitutes for life jackets. Even if your swimmer is experienced, flotation devices not approved by the Coast Guard as life preservers are toys and shouldn’t take you off your guard.

Just Say No To Mermaid Tales

To add to the pool toy warning – just say no to swimming in those fun new mermaid tales. Trapping your child’s legs can seriously hinder their swimming ability no matter how old they are or how strong a swimmer they may be.

Put Your Phone Away

A recent study suggests that the average adult checks their phone up to 50 times a day! Don’t let your phone become a life-threatening distraction. Check phone calls and emails later, you’re enjoying free time after all!

Assign an Adult Lifeguard for Crowds

It could be your backyard pool party, but crowds tend to create distractions and confusion. Have adults take turns being lifeguard for the pool. The guard shouldn’t be in the pool; instead they should be observing from a higher point if possible.

Head Warnings

No swimming signs aren’t guidelines and they are there for a reason. Also, pay attention to the flags on the beach. Red generally means no swimming. Again, the warnings are there for a reason.

Don’t Underestimate Waves

It only takes a second for waves to knock over anyone – including adults. Teach your children how to properly handle waves, currents, and undertows.
