City Guide: What To Do In Sofia, Bulgaria

Are you planning to visit the wonderfully intriguing city of Sofia in Bulgaria? This busy little metropolis is fascinating for a whole load of reasons, and so you will never be at a loss for things to do when you stay here. If you’ve just begun to plan your trip, you really have come to the right place!

From where to stay to where to party, this guide should give you all the details you could possibly need and maybe even a little more. Check out my recommendations and I’m certain that your trip to the capital city will be something of a blast.

Stay in Hostels

If you’re strapped for cash at the moment, then Sofia is most certainly the city for you. One of the greatest things about this place is that everything here is just so very affordable — including accommodation! First of all, if you want the true travel experience, you should check out some local hostels. The Art Hostel in the middle of town, for example, is ideal, especially if you want to meet other tourists.

Failing that, you could also check out AirBnb to see if you can rent an entire apartment. Many Sofia locals are willing to let out there homes which means that you may just get a bargain! (Side note: There are, of course, also mainstream hotels here that you can book online! The choices are endless.)

Explore the City Center

The center of the city is by no means huge, but it’s still worth checking out. You can spend an afternoon or so just walking around the area and getting a feel for the atmosphere here. One of the major things that you will notice is the fact that there is a broad range of shopping outlets here. From designer retailers to cheap and cheerful stores, there’s something for everyone.

You may also want to check out some of the local cafes, bars, and restaurants in the area; of which there are plenty. You’ll likely be pleased to find that most of the younger locals will speak English, and so can help you navigate the city with no problem at all.

Trek in the Countryside

One of the main things that tourists seem to adore about Sofia is the grand mountainous regions that surround it. You can reach the mountains or peaks by walking or taking a short train ride. (Be sure to map out your route before you head off on your trip!)

Once you start climbing the peaks here, you will get a really stunning view of the entire city. This is a real photo opportunity for tourists so be sure to take a camera. The best way to experience the rural side of town is to spend a whole day here. Pack a picnic (there won’t be many cafes up there!) and get trekking.

Dance Through the Night

The nightlife is a massive thing in Sofia, so prepare yourself for a night you’ll never forget… Or maybe one you can barely remember. From rock bars to underground clubs, there’s sure to be a place that suits your taste.

Rock’nRolla (on Graf Ignatiev) is one of the best-known clubs in the city. Here, you will find one room dedicated to hardcore rock tunes and another dedicated to rock… karaoke. You read that right! Before you head out to party, make sure you get some rest — the bars here are open until 5am or even 6am. Yikes!
