Take To The Beaches In Fuengirola On The Costa Del Sol In Spain

Nestled on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, Fuengirola is rightfully a popular beachfront resort, but there is more than just sand.

Fuengirola’s history goes back a long way. Where the town now stands, the Phoenicians, Romans and Moorish civilizations have made it their home in the past. Dotted around the town, you will find much evidence of this. However, for now, we are staying on the beach.

Beaches stretching for 7 km

One of the major attractions of Fuengirola is the approximately 7 km (4.3 mi) of wide, well-tended sandy beaches stretching down the coastline. All along the way, is an attractive paved promenade (Paseo Maritimo), making this the perfect place to stroll. Along the way, many restaurants and chiringuitos (beach restaurants) line the way, serving the freshest seafood and other delights.

For those who are feeling ambitious, it is possible to walk all the way from Carvajal Beach on the border with the neighboring resort town of Benalmadena Costa and through the beachside suburb of Los Boliches. Next, pass the town’s fishing and leisure port and keep on going all the way to Sohail Castle, a Moorish fortification, standing on a hill overlooking the beach.

Sohail Castle

While it is quite an uphill walk to get there, Sohail Castle, or Castillo Sohail, is an interesting visit. A stroll up and around the castle gives wonderful views over the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountains. For a small fee, visitors can enter and explore the castle’s towers and see cannons standing point. There is also a small museum where you can learn more about the castle’s history.

Another aspect of the castle is its use for cultural purposes. Medieval fairs are often held here and in contrast, rock and other music concerts are held in the natural auditorium inside the castle, with many famous musicians appearing.

Dining on the beach in Fuengirola

Getting back to the beach and its many chiringuitos, these beach bars or restaurants offer more than just food and drink. Each has its own private bathroom facilities and offers a furnished beach area, with comfortable sun beds and thatched parasols for hire.

Hire out your sun bed for the day and while relaxing, just lift your hand for another cooling drink, while getting that perfect tan. Not a bad way to spend life at the beach!

On the other side of the coastal road, you can choose from a selection of Spanish and international cuisine. As you walk the promenade, you will spot Chinese, Indian, Swedish, Italian, Mexican, Lebanese and Dutch cuisine. A number of world-class hotels and apartment blocks also line the promenade.

Bear in mind, all the above only covers the beachfront – there are many more wonders to enjoy in Fuengirola, including the Bioparc Fuengirola animal park and nearby water parks.

Take a trip to Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol on your next Spanish vacation. To badly paraphrase actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, you’ll be back!
