Enjoy A Picnic At Buckingham Palace This SummerThe opportunity to stroll in the garden at Buckingham Palace has been a dream for many royal fans around the world. The good news is, self-guided tours are now being offered for the first time, allowing visitors to not only stroll in the beautiful gardens, but to also relax with a picnic, should they choose.

Note: During the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, visitors from the US should bear in mind that on arrival in England, they will have to either quarantine in the place they are staying or in a managed quarantine hotel for 10 days. They will also be required to take two coronavirus tests after their arrival in England, which must be booked prior to travel. Read more information on the UK Border Control website.

Visit the gardens at Buckingham Palace

People have been longing for some good news in the world as the pandemic continues and now we finally have some! The grounds at Buckingham Palace are being opened to the public for the very first time on a self-guided tour basis. For those who prefer, official guided tours are still available.

After a busy time, exploring the historic sites of London, a self-guided tour in beautiful gardens is very welcome. The historic, 39-acre garden at Buckingham Palace was first laid out in the 1820s when King George IV turned Buckingham House into a palace.

While set in an urban location, the sprawling gardens offer an amazing array of flora and fauna, including rare native plants seldom seen in the city of London. This is a rich biodiverse habitat and is home to more than 1,000 trees and 320 different grasses and wildflowers. The garden also features the beautiful Rose Garden, as well as a wildflower meadow and summer house.

A route has been planned through the garden, which visitors are free to explore, taking in the plane trees planted and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the 156-meter Herbaceous Border, as well as beautiful views across the lake of the island, with its beehives. Part of the visit includes the unique opportunity to picnic on the sweeping lawns of the garden.

When can the gardens be visited?

The gardens will be open to the public for self-guided tours on weekends in April and May. Should visitors want to learn more about the history of the garden, they are also welcome to join a guided tour. At this time of year, visitors will experience the garden in springtime, with the camellia, azalea and magnolia shrubs and trees in bloom and the meadows carpeted with bluebells and primroses.

From May through September, special guided tours will be available of Buckingham Palace, and from July, garden tours will be included in the visits.
