Traveling from the US to Ireland? Here’s the latest news

All around the world, travel restrictions are gradually being eased, while vaccination programs continue. This means Americans can start traveling after more than a year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Green and beautiful Ireland is a great draw this summer, so let’s look at what the latest requirements are for US travelers visiting the country.

What you need to know about visiting Ireland

As travelers know, as countries start opening up to international travelers, restrictions can change. It is always best to check the latest information before actually making a booking. While the US Embassy in Ireland still recommends against unnecessary travel, Americans are currently permitted to visit Ireland from the USA.

Currently, entry into the Republic of Ireland of Northern Ireland doesn’t rely on a traveler’s vaccination status. However, according to Reuters, this could change from July 19 when both countries are expected to implement a vaccine passport scheme, similar to the EU Digital COVID pass.

Latest entry requirements for US travelers

Ireland will accept proof of vaccination, but will also accept unvaccinated travelers, as long as they have proof of a negative PCR test. They will need to self-quarantine before taking a second test. Unvaccinated children from 7 to 18 years of age will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test prior to entry.

Reuters quoted Prime Minister Micheal Martin as saying in a media statement, “If we continue to mind each other, if we continue to make the right choices, the end of this is within our grasp.”

The latest plans to ease restrictions come at a time when Ireland is starting to lift its lockdown measures. During this week, outdoor dining at restaurants and pubs will reopen, while hotels will be able to welcome guests from Wednesday. From July 5, indoor dining will be allowed to resume.

The decision to welcome US tourists comes at a time when several European countries have starting opening their borders to Americans, including Italy, Croatia and Greece. The EU as a whole is planning

to reopen to vaccinated international travelers this summer, including Spain and France.

Connemara

What can US travelers expect from Ireland?

Ireland is known for its gorgeous scenery, including the majestic Mourne Mountain, the beautiful Connemara, and the views of Donegal and more. However, the country is also steeped in history, with the fascinating prehistoric monuments at Slea Head in Kerry, Brú na Bóinne and Carrowmore in Sligo. Ruins from Ireland’s monastic past are also worth visiting, like those in Cashel, Glendalough and Clonmacnoise. More recent history can be enjoyed at the Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, or the fascinating Titanic Experience in Cobh.

If you are planning a summer vacation in Ireland, the various requirements might make things feel a little difficult. Despite this, with the warm and friendly nature of the Irish, locals will more than make up for the inconvenience, by sharing their landscapes, towns and cities with US travelers.
