Fear not, however, as sports fans can appreciate this major event much closer to home, in Colorado Springs, USA. The United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum is perfect for a family outing, to learn about the history of the games, or to experience the latest events on a massive, 50-ft screen.

There was much excitement about the opening of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum back in 2020. However, due to the pandemic, it was decided to hold back on the celebrations of its grand opening. What better time to celebrate that opening but now, in July 2021, to coincide with the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo, a major event that was also postponed by the virus.

Now the museum is ready to hold a number of weekly events from now right through to Labor Day. Among the events is a meet-and-greet with former Team USA athletes, as well as the Tokyo Games Fan Fest where guests can enjoy the action of the Olympics on a 50-ft screen, along with live entertainment, food and drink.

About the museum building

The building that houses the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum is impressive in itself and boasts being one of the most accessible and interactive museums in the world. The architects were inspired by the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. In designing the new museum, they used ramps and elevators throughout the space to eliminate the need for steps.

The museum features 12 galleries, following the teams’ journeys and using technology that also prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity. Due to this, visitors can even customize their sport preferences during their tour of the museum.

Visitors can see a permanent tribute that honors the history and commitment of Team USA athletes, celebrating their most unforgettable moments.

Meanwhile, the stories found in the museum are hoped to serve as inspiration for future generations of Olympic and Paralympics athletes and fans. In fact, visitors can watch a film titled “To Take Part,” as well as visit a frequently updated, rotating gallery.

Museum CEO, Christopher Liedel, said in a statement, “The stories of our Olympians and Paralympians are the stories of this nation’s history.”

“Every American can see themselves in the members of Team USA and will be inspired by their dedication, perseverance and respect for the Olympic and Paralympic values. The museum has the unique privilege of telling these stories, and we are ready and excited to share them with the world,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Tokyo Olympics 2020 runs from July 23 through August 8, followed by the Paralympics from August 24 through September 5.
