Travel + Leisure has named Costa Rica as its 2024 Destination of the Year, due to its commitment to a sustainable future. The Central American country is known for its deep-rooted connection to its indigenous communities and to its environment, and offering the best in ecotourism and sustainable vacations.

Meanwhile, the country is the ninth winner of the Destination of the Year award, selected each year by Travel + Leisure’s editors. Among the previous winners are Australia, Italy and Japan. Jacqui Gifford, Editor-in-Chief of Travel + Leisure made a statement about the win, saying:

In recent years, Costa Rica has become well known for its major contributions to ecotourism, including the launch of eco-lodges.
