Summer in Spain has officially started with plenty of sunny skies and hot weather and, of course, visits to the beach. However, when traveling with the little ones, it is best to take care when choosing your vacation destination, as some beaches are safer than others. Nius Diario selected the safest beaches for children in Spain. These are beaches where they can play on the sand and swim or splash around in shallow waters.

1. Playa de Misericordia, Paseo Maritimo Antonio Banderas, Málaga

Located in Málaga on the Costa del Sol in Andalucía, Playa de Misericordia is an urban beach backed by children’s playgrounds and overlooking a calm sea. Plenty of free parking is available and lifeguards monitor the beach. Restaurants and chiringuitos are handy for food and refreshments. During summer evenings, an open-air cinema plays movies on the beach.

This spacious beach means it will never get crowded and the sand dunes make it a fun place for kids. Meanwhile, the calm, crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming and the beach is backed by several chiringuitos for food and refreshments. What makes the beach even more fun is the Roman city standing behind the sand. Baelo Claudia is one of Andalucía’s most significant and well-preserved Roman archaeological sites. Meanwhile, among the ruins is a temple, an aqueduct, a forum, residential areas and a large fish-salting factory.

Located in the south of the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, Playa de Maspalomas is another spacious beach that never gets too crowded. The kids can have loads of fun on the many sand dunes, or splash in the gentle waves. Moreover, the beach has a busy promenade lined with restaurants and souvenir shops, making it the ideal place to spend the day. The beach is also famous for its lighthouse, which has been standing there since February 1, 1890.

4. Playa de Comillas, Cantabria

Located in the village of Comillas, this Blue Flag beach is renowned for its quality and safety and is said to be one of the best beaches on the Cantabrian coast. Here, the ocean has a gentle swell, making it ideal for the kids to splash around and have fun. Meanwhile, a Red Cross lifeguard service keeps the beach safe for everyone. Moreover, the beach has access to restaurants and toilet facilities.

5. Playa Norte, Peñíscola, Castellón

This beautiful beach has also been awarded the coveted Blue Flag for its safety and cleanliness. Meanwhile, a promenade offers restaurants, toilets and shower areas and sun beds and parasols for hire. Moreover, lifeguards are on duty during the summer to keep an eye on vacationers. For the older kids, the beach offers a surf practice area and other water sports.
