The Word on the Water bookstore also bears the handle “London Bookbarge” and is located onboard a vintage Dutch boat, floating in the Regents Canal. It was originally a mobile bookstore, constantly dismantled and rebuilt to enable it to travel. However, in 2015, the store’s owners received a license allowing it to be permanently located where it floats now. Meanwhile, not only does Word on the Water offer a selection of literary titles, but it also hosts an exciting space for musical and poetry events.

Why visit a mere bookstore when you can explore a town full of bookstores? Located in Mundal town in the Fjærland region in Norway, some old and dilapidated waterfront houses were transformed into around ten bookstores. Meanwhile, the combined shelves can hold over 2.5 miles worth of secondhand books. Meanwhile, after buying your share of books you can rest on any of the town’s benches to read to your heart’s delight, or just relax and view the beautiful surrounding landscapes.

Now heading to Argentina, where Buenos Aires is known as the Bookstore Capital of the World and for good reason. The one in question is located in a magnificent theater that formerly hosted ballet performances, operatic events and fabulous tango legends. Later, it was transformed into a cinema which housed 1,050 patrons.

Now, El Ateneo Grand Splendid offers around 120,000 book titles, mostly in Spanish. While you might not be able to read the novels on sale, the bookstore’s beauty is a marvel to explore. Moreover, visitors and enjoy a coffee in the store, or even a live piano recital.

Tell A Story is a bookstore on wheels that can be seen in the winding streets of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. It was opened by Francisco Antolin, an author himself, who was inspired by a mobile stationery shop he spotted in China.

Meanwhile, the mobile bookstore reveals the literature of the world to the locals and tourists. These days, the bus hosts many Portuguese classics translated into more than four languages, including English.
