Now the summer crowds are gradually dispersing in Europe, along with the extreme heat, this is the ideal time to visit Europe by train. Moreover, during this shoulder season, train ticket prices are lower making now the ideal time to enjoy a rail adventure in Europe.

European countries Americans want to visit by train

Many American travelers dream of boarding one of Europe’s better trains, watching the scenery go by in comfort. Meanwhile, Europe offers a range of rail experiences, including high-speed trains (particularly in Spain) and revamped sleeper trains, which can be a vacation in itself. However, this continent has so many destinations, it is often hard to decide where to go on a fun European train vacation.

A study was run by the team at Nomad to uncover American travelers’ European railway vacation dreams. By doing so they discovered the most popular European countries that US travelers want to tour by train.

The study found that Italy is the most desired train vacation destination in Europe. Moreover, it came up tops for 34 US states, including the people of Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois and Kansas. Meanwhile, gorgeous, mountainous Switzerland came in second place as the top choice in seven US states.

Spain and Germany both share third place as the most-searched train vacations in four states each. Bonnie Scotland came last on the list with only Alaska viewing the UK country as its most desired rail vacation.

Italy’s railway network connects all major cities like Florence, Rome and Venice with rural and coastal towns. Here, the appeal is the country’s rich history and culture, art heritage, exquisite cities, sunny coastlines and, naturally, delicious food. Head to Tuscany and hike its green hills, enjoy a beach vacation on the Amalfi Coast, or head to the fascinating ancient ruins of Pompeii.

Italy’s high-speed train network, Frecciarossa, makes it quick and easy for travelers to cover large distances quickly. Meanwhile, regional trains offer a more leisurely journey to lesser-known destinations.

2. Switzerland

Switzerland offers so much natural beauty, with its mountainous landscapes, charming traditional cities and beautiful lakes. Everywhere travelers turn, the views are like those on a box of quality Swiss chocolates!

Looking at exploring Switzerland by train, one highlight is the Glacier Express, which ironically is often dubbed the “slowest express train in the world.” This doesn’t stop it from being one of the best rail journeys, on which travelers head through the heart of the Swiss Alps, passing over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels. Meanwhile, the train’s panoramic windows offer passengers the most breathtaking views of towering peaks, alpine meadows and deep gorges.

One particularly popular journey is the Romantic Road, which takes passengers through medieval towns, and views of centuries-old castles and vineyards.  Another popular train ride heads through the Rhine Valley while following the river’s course through charming villages.

Besides the high-speed train, Spain offers a comprehensive network of train routes, one of which is the most popular is the route from Madrid to Sevilla. On this route, travelers can explore Andalucía, with its fascinating Moorish architecture, experience flamenco dancing and music and tasty tapas and spend quality time on the Costa del Sol.

Another popular scenic train journey heads along the Costa Brava, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean coastline. Heading up north, travelers can experience the green and lovely Basque Country with its mix of Spanish and French cultures.

One of the most famous is the West Highland Line, which whisks travelers from Glasgow to the beautiful town of Mallaig. Meanwhile, the route heads through some of the most spectacular scenery, including the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films. Here, the Jacobite Steam Train is often dubbed the “Hogwarts Express,” an absolute must for fans of the books and movies.
