Viking Announces A New Virtual Way To Travel With Viking TV

With travel plans put on hold, many seasoned travellers are looking for alternative ways to explore the world, even if it has to be done through old photos, inspirational social media posts, or even the virtual world from the comfort of our homes.

While this new way of virtual traveling will never replace the sights, sounds, and taste that come with the opportunities to explore our vast world, Viking Cruises is making it a little bit easier for travellers to escape, even if it’s just from your living room to the kitchen and back again. The company has announced the launch of Viking.TV, a new digital platform designed to connect guests and travellers to learn about the destinations along with the people and the cultures that make each and every Viking Cruise so unique.

With Travel Plans Put On Hold, Many Seasoned Travellers Are Looking For Alternative Ways To Explore The World

Just this week chairman Torsten Hagen and executive vice president Karine Hagen announced that Viking.TV was launched to help build the company’s travel community while everyone is at home and online during this current global pandemic that is the coronavirus.

“Right now, we are all staying at home instead of traveling together, but that does not have to mean that the only thing we can do is watch the news,” said Karine. “My father, Torstein Hagen, and I felt that if we cannot for the time being bring our guests to the world, let’s bring the world to our guests. Viking.TV is a way for us to continue exploring the world in comfort—from the comfort of our homes.”

The Viking.TV Content Consists Of Three Different Categories

The Viking.TV content consists of three different categories – existing content, their cultural partners content and user generated content. There’s also livestreamed content that features a different host and topic at 2:00 pm EST every weekday and archived afterwards.

The destination insight videos give travellers a sneak peek of what they can expect on future cruises and trips while the cultural partner content features TED Talks, The Viking Ship Museum documentaries, Reflections by Sissel, concerts by Alma Deutscher and much more. Meanwhile, the User generated content is a forum where guests and crew can exchange greetings. There’s also a section called The Kitchen Table where guests can submit their own recipes.

There will also be a schedule of daily participants that will be announced at the start of each week with new themes:

Museum Mondays – On Viking.TV, Museum Mondays will take the place of the onboard “Munch Moments” event; viewers can expect sessions with director and various curators from Oslo’s Munch Museum, providing virtual privileged access to exhibitions, experts and restoration facilities. Additional museums may also participate in the future.

Resident Historian Tuesdays – Viking’s Resident Historian faculty provides guests with lectures and roundtable discussions on significant milestones in world history. Each Tuesday, a Resident Historian will host an iconic lecture followed by a Q&A session.

Wednesdays with Music – On Wednesdays, Viking.TV will highlight some of the world’s most interesting artists, composers and conductors of the musical world.

Guest Speaker Thursdays – Every Thursday, Viking.TV viewers can enjoy conversations with a variety of academics and individuals; upcoming hosts include British broadcaster journalist Anne Diamond, world-renowned Norwegian explorer Liv Arnesen, and Xander Parish, principal dancer with the Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg.

Fridays at Home at Highclere Castle – Every Friday, visitors to Viking.TV can get a glimpse of life “At Home at Highclere,” as Lady Carnarvon broadcasts tours and conversations.

Wellness Weekends – Saturdays and Sundays on Viking.TV are dedicated to wellbeing during uncertain times and will include staff from the LivNordic spas onboard Viking’s ocean ships, as well as other selected hosts, largely focusing on yoga and meditation.

As many avid travellers know, Viking Cruises has been designed for the guest who has an interest in history, art, music and cuisine. What makes the company so unique is that their ships are small enough to get their guests closer to their destinations with more of an intimate feel. They also give more time at each port and more overnights. What’s more, a lot of travellers love Viking for their clean, sophisticated and Scandinavian-inspired décor.
