Let’s face it, the middle seat is definitely not a popular spot to sit in on a flight. You don’t get a window view or easy access to the toilet which is why most people don’t want to sit there. However, Virgin Australia is doing something about the problem by launching the Middle Seat Lottery to tempt passengers to take the middle seat.

According to a social media poll run by Virgin Australia, only 0.6 percent of more than 7,500 people prefer to sit in the middle seat. In a line of three, let’s face it, the middle seat has very little going for it. You don’t get a window view that makes it worthwhile struggling to get to the bathroom. Meanwhile, those who like convenience tend to opt for the aisle seat. However, this could soon change if the airline’s plan to get passengers willing to book the dreaded middle seat succeeds.

In fact, Virgin Australia has come up with the idea of the Middle Seat Lottery, a special raffle worth some AUD230,000 (US$145,000). Moreover, the lottery is only available to those passengers who choose to sit in the middle seat, either voluntarily, or involuntarily, during a flight.

Forbes quotes Jayne Hrdlicka, CEO of Virgin Australia Group as saying in a press release:

Virgin Australia is an airline that’s doing things differently and we are having a lot of fun coming up with exciting innovations to make every part of the travel experience more wonderful.

Now we’re giving our loyal guests the opportunity to win from a prize pool valued at over $230,000 for simply sitting in a middle seat.

How to enter the Middle Seat Lottery

From now until April 23, 2023, any Velocity Frequent Flyer member aged 18 years or more and seated in a middle seat, can use the airline’s app to sign up for the lottery. A different prize will be awarded on a weekly basis to the winner of a lucky draw.

Meanwhile, among the treats up for grabs is a two-night holiday in Cairns, including flights, a bungee jump and accommodation. Another innovative prize is a full-day helicopter pub crawl, including return flights to Darwin.

The prizes also include winning Virgin’s “Platinum Velocity” frequent flier status for one year. On top of this, the lucky traveler will also get one million extra Velocity Points, along with a few refurbished, themed galley carts.

Moreover, any fans of the Australian Football League can win flights and tickets to the Grand Final along with exclusive access to the pre-game lunch and after-party.

Once Virgin Australia made the announcement on social media on October 24, many followers deemed it a “brilliant plan.” However, others stressed that nothing could get them to sit in the dreaded middle seat.
