How to Spend a Holiday in Australia’s Gold Coast

How to Spend a Holiday in Australia’s Gold Coast
I had never heard of the Gold Coast until two years ago, when my friend convinced me to make it part of our big Australia trip. Australia is a diverse country, made up of the Outback, big cities, rainforest, and beaches. South of Brisbane on the Eastern border, the Gold Coast is the epitome of an Australian beach town. This city is perfect for any traveler who needs to unwind and have some fun. (Goodness knows I did!) Here are the best ways to relax and have a good time in the Gold Coast.

RIDE IN A HOT AIR BALLOON

What better way to see a foreign city than by hot air balloon? Riding in a balloon was just as majestic, and not nearly as terrifying, as I had imagined. We booked a ride with Hot Air. This company is fantastic, with friendly employees and a good price. For AU$ 250, we were picked up from our hotel, given a 30-minute ride in the balloon, taken to a vineyard for brunch and champagne, and returned to our accommodation. Hot Air operates in several other Australian cities, but the Gold Coast is the destination with the most reliable good weather.

GO TO SURFERS PARADISE

The city is full of beaches, but my favorite is Surfers Paradise Beach. On this beach, you have a great view of the Gold Coast’s skyline. There are also many shops, bars, clubs, and hotels nearby. If you want a classic beach experience (which is kind of what the Gold Coast is all about) go to Surfers Paradise.

HIT THE THEMES PARKS

The Gold Coast is famous for its theme parks. We chose to spend a day at Dreamworld, the city’s largest theme park. Other options include Sea World, Warner Bros. Movie World, and Wet’n’Wild Gold Coast. Going to multiple parks can get expensive, so consider trying a tactic we used. We sat through a time share pitch at our hotel, politely refused the deal, and still received one free and one discounted ticket to Dreamworld! If you have the willpower, it’s definitely worth the discount.

TAKE ON THE TREETOP CHALLENGE

The TreeTop Challenge is a company that appeals to the adrenaline junkie in every traveler. There are six treetop courses combining ropes, swings, bridges, and flying foxes. The TreeTop Challenge is one of the most popular attractions in the Gold Coast, so don’t be scared! You are provided with safety equipment and trained professionals.
