Berlin, the capital of Germany came out tops as Europe’s ultimate destination for Christmas markets while offering an amazing 42 markets to choose from, spread across the city. Starting as early as November 25, the city offers travelers an unparalleled festive experience that combines a variety of market options, extensive holiday decorations, and an inviting and festive atmosphere, even though daily highs are only 4°C (39°F) in December. These findings make Berlin the top choice for travelers seeking an exciting, affordable Christmas ambiance.

2. Rome, Italy

Coming in second place, Rome in Italy brings a Mediterranean charm to the season with 25 Christmas markets. Starting in early December, Rome draws travelers with mild temperatures, averaging around 13°C (55°F). While the costs for accommodations are higher than in Berlin, Rome offers a warm holiday spirit and iconic sights, making it a unique destination for lovers of Christmas markets.

Next in line at number three is the City of Light, Paris, which offers 11 Christmas markets to choose from, opening in late November. This makes it an appealing option for travelers on a budget. Meanwhile, the city kicks off its festive atmosphere in late November, securing it as a place worthy of a Christmas visit.

5. Bucharest, Romania

Starting in early December, Bucharest in Romania offers eight markets across the city that showcase local holiday traditions. Staying in Andorra for a week costs $1,477. The city is perfect for travelers seeking comfort and premium experiences in high-quality accommodations. Meanwhile, getting around the city is easy and affordable with taxi rates averaging $2.8 per kilometer, making it easy to explore the city and its surrounds.

8. Copenhagen, Denmark

To quote Danny “Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen” offers a unique festive experience with a Danish twist to the holidays with five Christmas markets. Here, accommodations average $654, while the city’s distinctive design, wonderful festive spirit and culinary treasures make for a memorable Christmas visit.

Brussels in Belgium comes in ninth place, with its festivities kicking off on November 29 with three markets around the city. Visitors can also enjoy the city’s gourmet food scene with meals ranging from $21.4 for an affordable meal to $85.7 for a mid-range restaurant.  Moreover, accommodations in Brussels are reasonably priced at an average of $842 per week’s stay. With temperatures typically between 3°C and 6°C (37°F and 43°F), Brussels offers brisk but comfortable temperatures for exploring the city’s markets.

Rounding out the top 10 European capitals with the most Christmas markets, Helsinki, Finland offers a distinctly Nordic holiday experience with its three festive markets. This makes Finland’s capital ideal for travelers seeking a cozy and traditional Christmas atmosphere. Meanwhile, a week-long stay in Helsinki is reasonably affordable, with an average hotel cost of $612, promising a comfortable and quality stay.
