This beautiful 13th-century fortress nestles in acres of wooded parklands, while close to the iconic city of Edinburgh. The castle lies on the banks of the River Esk, making for a beautiful landscape. Meanwhile, Dalhousie Castle Hotel & Aqueous Spa offers a luxurious stay together with a warm Scottish welcome.

The former fortress is one of the oldest inhabited castles in Scotland and in the past, kings and queens have relaxed with tea in the drawing room. Meanwhile, there are rumors that the building is haunted, adding extra excitement to a stay here. Readers can take a virtual tour of the hotel in the video included here.

Stay in a modern castle in Scotland

For those who prefer modern architecture, the next castle is a perfect choice, nestling in the wilds of Scotland. This contemporary building was designed by the renowned Boston architect, Moshe Safdie, and construction was finished in 2003.

Like Dalhousie Castle, this modern structure is tucked away on a sprawling, family-owned estate in the Highlands. Moreover, it is available for an exclusive family or group stay and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. It may be modern, but the building offers a feeling of a luxurious stay in a traditional Highland estate. In fact, the owners say it is located in a private estate the size of Los Angeles!

Thornbury Castle & Restaurant, Gloucester

Nestling in the beautiful Cotswolds of England, this striking Tudor building has been around for 500 years. Thornbury Castle was supposed to be the home of the Duke of Buckingham when construction started in 1511. However, tragically, in 1521, when construction was completed, the Duke was accused of treason by his cousin, Henry VIII. This led to him being beheaded and his lovely home confiscated.

Meanwhile, 14 years later, Henry VIII and his wife, Anne Boleyn, spent their honeymoon at Thornbury Castle. Fast forward to now, and that same iconic building is available as a vacation home. The interior features beautiful furnishings and, Duke’s beheading aside, is a perfect luxury retreat. Guests at the hotel can enjoy a stroll in the beautiful walled garden, dine in the restaurant, or enjoy a relaxing massage in their beautifully appointed bedchamber.
